Inang Reyna means so much to me. It's not just a film; it's a part of my heart, my upbringing, and the silent struggles in my own family. I wanted to tell a story that captures the reality of the conversations we often avoid at the dinner table, the ones that weigh heavy on our hearts but never seem to find the right moment to be shared.
The film is about Dolores and Isaac, a mother and son who, like many of us, have learned to cope by hiding their pain under humor, routine, and simply getting through each day. Growing up in a Filipino household, I saw how grief and loss were often swept under the rug not out of neglect, but because we were taught to be strong and keep moving forward. But what happens when that strength becomes a burden, stopping us from connecting with the people we love the most?
With Inang Reyna, I wanted to peel back the layers and dive into the raw, messy emotions that we all carry. Dolores represents every mother who's had to put on a brave face for her children, even when she's falling apart inside. Isaac represents every child who's felt the weight of their parent's unspoken grief but didn't know how to reach out. This film is about their journey to find each other again, to acknowledge the hurt they've been avoiding, and to realize that sometimes, the strongest thing we can do is let ourselves be vulnerable.
